Lower Palisades Campground
Palisades Campground is located on the lower Crooked river. Palisades is a long narrow campground offering 15 single sites, the majority right on the river. The campground also has two small fishing platforms.

There are nine campgrounds operated by the Bureau of Land Management on what is referred to as the Chimney Rock segment of the Lower Crooked Wild and Scenic River. The nine campgrounds are all within a seven mile stretch that lies below Bowman Dam and Prineville Reservoir. Campgrounds are easily accessed from Prineville to the North or Bend from the South.

The lower Crooked River flows through a steep basalt canyon. The canyon is over 600 feet deep in some stretches and provides great vistas for campers. This is the high desert with long hot summer days and bone chilling winters. The steep canyon allows for a variety of vegetation to grow. Mature junipers dominate the landscape with sagebrush and bunch grasses filling in the gaps.

Facilities at the campgrounds are typical of BLM sites. Each campground offers vault toilets, picnic tables, garbage cans and fire rings. Chimney Rock campground is the only facility to offer potable water.

Fishing and hiking are the primary activities on lower Crooked River. Smith Rock State park, a short drive away provides excellent climbing for experienced climbers. Prineville Reservoir is just to the south and offers motorized boating and swimming. The main draw to the lower Crooked river is fishing, and specifically fly fishing. The river is not stocked, but has healthy populations of rainbow trout and mountain whitefish. Fishing is dependent on river flows. Heavy releases of water from Bowman dam in the spring can make the river unfishable. Fishing is open all year with bait allowed during the summer months. But the majority of fisherman chose to fly fish. The water is typically off color, but don't let this fool you the fish are eager and willing to find your flies.
